No matter how you voted, we are now officially out of the EU, and businesses need to make sure that they adapt to this accordingly. Here at Trads, we have been successful in ensuring that our post-Brexit operations have run smoothly. If you are still feeling somewhat uncertain, read on for our top tips on what to do next.
Brexit has not been exactly a simple transition. The decision to leave the European Union was a surprise for many people, and once we had voted to leave there were numerous stalling and stopping points. Fortunately, at Trads, we used this time to our advantage.
Customer satisfaction is a priority for us, so we expended a great deal of energy during the lead-up to Brexit to make sure that all of our customers could expect continuity of trade.
Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Barry Whitehead, has been key to maintaining our post-Brexit success. One of his top tips is to make use of government websites in order to help you understand exactly what Brexit means for you, your company, or any buying and selling activity that you may be participating in.
You can read through the new Brexit rules and advice here. If you are still having difficulty understanding all of these new regulations, there are a number of Brexit transition helplines available here.
If you haven’t already, it will probably be worth checking out postponed VAT accounting (PVA). As long as you are a UK VAT registered importer, you can account for and recover import VAT on your VAT return. To find out whether this could save you some cash, check out the government guidelines here.
It is important to check whether the UK has a trade agreement with the country that you are importing from. If this is the case you may be able to pay less or no duty on goods, known as ‘preferential rates’. (This is product dependent and based on the commodity code). However, in order for your business to avoid these charges you must ensure that the goods in question meet the rules of origin. If you are unsure, you can brush up on the rules of origin on this government website.
